The University of North Carolina School of the Arts provides gifted emerging artists with the experience, knowledge, and skills needed to excel in their disciplines and in their lives while serving and enriching the cultural and economic prosperity of the people of North Carolina and the nation. UNCSA is the state’s unique professional school for the performing, visual, and moving image arts training students at the high school, undergraduate, and master’s levels for professional careers in the arts.

Residing on 74 acres and in possession of eleven performance and screening spaces comparable to the best in the industry, UNCSA consists of five schools- Dance, Design and Production (includes a Visual Arts Program), Drama, Music and Filmmaking as well as High School Academic Program and a Division of Liberal Arts awarding BFA and MFA degrees. The UNCSA School of Filmmaking (SOF) is ranked among the best film schools in the country. SOF teaches by doing. In the first two years at SOF students direct and shoot as many as six digital films as they take hands-on courses in every facet of modern film production. Subsequently a concentration is chosen in directing, producing, editing, animation and more — and collaborate with classmates on ambitious short films submitted to film festivals around the world. In students’ senior year they travel from SOF’s Studio Village that include state-of-the-art sound stages, a backlot, recording studios, animation studios and VR/AR labs to Los Angeles to screen their films for industry executives and influential UNCSA alumni. The goal is to become a “complete” filmmaker — an experienced storyteller skilled in all components of the current and emerging film arts.
